A ‘cutie patootie making twinkle heavy R&B’. That’s how Rina Sawayama describes herself on her soundcloud page, and having taken a cheeky listen to a few of her tracks, including her latest release, ‘Where U Are’ (a re-work of Michael Jackson’s ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ that’s taken off her forthcoming E.P. Alone Together), it’s hard to argue with that statement really- although having had a little peak at her instagram pics I’m thinking cutie with a slightly naughty side (in an arty way might we add)… Back to the tunes though cos that’s what we’re here for after all, and if you’re looking for more of a precise steer on how her ‘twinkle heavy R&B’ sounds, I’d describe it as being the sort of warm late 80’s/ early 90’s indebted vibe the likes of Blood Orange, Solange & Jessie Ware have been having it away with over the last few years. Which we’re big fans of by the way.
Couple of other factoids about the lady before I leave you to it, first, Rina’s a Politics graduate (which I imagine means she’s pretty handy in a debate/ argument), and secondly despite it’s very polished look, she co-directed the vid to ‘Where U Are’ on a shoestring budget along with her bud Ali Kurr, who’s bedroom it was actually recorded in. Impressive hey. Nice furnishings Ali, we especially like the space posters and the shimmery drape thingy, although it kinda looks like it may be stifling that plant’s personal growth. Also is that a cow on the bedside table?
